Storing dahlias

Overwintering Dahlias: Keep them healthy for next year

Dahlias are beautiful autumn bloomers, but unfortunately, they are not frost-hardy. To enjoy full, healthy flowers year after year, it’s important to store the tubers properly.

Before winter sets in, it’s time to lift the tubers from the ground. Cut back the stems to a few centimeters above the tuber and gently remove any soil or loose roots. This helps keep the tubers strong and healthy for the next growing season.

A key tip: label your tubers carefully. Note which varieties are tall and which are short, so you can plant them in the same spots next year. This not only helps with garden design but also ensures your dahlias thrive to their fullest potential.

Store the tubers in a cool, dry, frost-free place. This keeps them vital and ready to plant again in the spring. With proper care, you can enjoy the vibrant colors and versatility of your dahlias year after year, both in the garden and in bouquets.
